Explain, Please

So here's what I'm wondering today.

Why is that you can fight to keep a kid awake in the van for the last 3 miles home - playing peekaboo games in the rearview mirror, singing silly songs featuring their name, rolling the windows up and down, and all those other time-proven tactics to keep their eyes at least half way open, and to crack half a drool-cornered smile - because you know, you know!, that if they fall asleep even for 2 minutes in the van, they will not sleep another wink when you get them to their crib...

Why is that after all that, when they are so obviously exhausted, it then takes them half an hour to cry themselves to sleep, at home, in their own comfy bed?

What the heck is up with that?
